From 1957 to 1962. It’s as simple as that.

Insolent Freshness

Not the first G.C from JLP here (of course!), but the first from Ws Spirits. This one is a blend of 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1962, as its name suggests. 60yo, G.C, 49,9%.  Let’s go!

Colour: Dark amber, orange lights. Irregular medium tears.

Nose: Full of heady candied citruses notes at first. Bright fruity shades. Opulent orange blossom scents. A tad of roasted notes, mainly on toasted coffee beans. Nice heady perfume made of floral shades (chamomile) and warm spiced notes (cumin and cinnamon). This nose is a bit shy, but you can almost anticipate a fruity bomb palate.

Palate: Extra-oily texture. Full of tangerine marmalade notes. Thick cognac that sticks to your tongue. Very bright profile, with a great balance between citruses richness and spice freshness (cardamom, fresh licorice). Infinite licorice aftertaste. Strange palate, but not in a bad way. It feels a bit like a brand-new eau-de-vie (like a blanche d’armagnac) with an old-fashioned tuxedo. Yes, definitively strange.

Last Notes: Rancioted buttery and nutty notes with air. Full of orange blossom notes again. Distinct chalky G.C/P.C notes in the background. Nice verbena and rooibos shades too. Back on the palate, you get a rich mix of almond paste aromas and fresh licorice again. Great mouth length by the way. It feels really young regarding its age. It ends on fresh bay leaves and yuzu.

Very disturbing kind of old G.C. I’m quite impressed by the freshness of a cognac with this age statement. Delicate, rich but maybe a tad imprecise in my humble opinion. But hey, that’s a 89, so it remains a solid one.

My very subjective note: 89/100
